OH&S

OH&S OfficerWe don't live to work; it's the other way around. You have every right to expect that you will return from work each day as healthy and well as when you started.

Occupational Health and Safety is a primary focus of CPSU. We employ a dedicated Health and Safety expert, we run training sessions for members, and we actively encourage and participate in government health and safety improvement programmes.

CPSU's health and safety expert is Carl Marsich.

Below is a range of fact and information sheets to help you know and enforce your health and safety rights at work.

HSR support program 2009-2012

Supporting HSRs in Child Protection, Youth Justice and Housing across DHS

HSRs have an active role in making Victorian workplaces safer and employers should support and encourage them to effectively perform their role.

HSRs facilitate consultation in the workplace and provide a channel for employees to express their views and concerns on occupational health and safety (OHS) with their employer.

Review of Australia’s OHS Laws

The Federal Government has initiated a process to review OHS laws across Australia and CPSU believes that the Federal Government‘s review of Australia’s OHS laws must deliver the highest standard of protection for workers.

Computers and VDU Guidelines

Working with computers can cause workers a number of problems. These include stress, visual discomfort, as well as aches and pains in the hands, wrists, arms or shoulders.

The ACTU has Guidelines on Screen Based Work (below). The guidelines provide information on a range of issues associated with screen based work, including the ergonomics of the work station, electro-magnetic radiation and so on.

Stress

In an occupational health and safety sense, stress is essentially a misfit between a worker’s needs and capabilities, and what the workplace offers and demands.

Photocopiers

There`s rarely a workplace that doesn`t have at least one photocopier, but often little attention is given to ensuring the safety of this commonplace office equipment.
When photocopiers are purchased usually little attention is given to occupational health and safety standards. A place is found for the machine somewhere away from the main traffic areas and that's it- no more detail is attended to.

Ergonomics

This fact sheet answers the following questions with the workplace in mind: What is ergonomics? When is ergonomics necessary or useful? How do you get appropriate ergonomic advice?
