Workplace Agreement 2008 - Update 6/2008

Progress is being made on a number of key issues including Redeployment, Wage Increases, Structural Changes to our SSO Classification Structure, Reimbursement for WWCC, and a rewrite of SSO Dimensions of Work in bargaining for our new Agreement.

CPSU is still unable to provide specifics unfortunately on the negotiations as there is no firm government offer on the table, but we can advise that discussions have been positive on the following issues to date:

Redeployment Rights:

CPSU is seeking that SSOs employed on a single contract of 12 months receive redeployment rights. This will benefit Aides in particular

Pay Rises:

CPSU is seeking pay rises that equate to those paid to other public sector employees including teachers, nurses and police (the exact quantum and timing requires government approval) before an offer can be made.

Changes to the SSO Classification Structure:

CPSU is seeking adjustments that will deliver higher pay on top of the percentage pay rises.

Reimbursement for Working With Children Checks:

CPSU is ensuring payments are made that incorporate monies already outlaid for WWCC.

A Re-Write of the Award and Agreement Dimensions of Work:

This is currently well advanced and CPSU is seeking greater clarity between classifications and a greater capacity for SSO1 s to progress to higher levels. CPSU is seeking:

  • No technical staff to be employed at SSO1
  • Administrative staff that perform tasks that are not routine should be at SSO1 SR2 as a minimum
  • SSOs (Aides) who undertake medical intervention and/or provide specialist support to parents or teachers must be at SSO1SR2 as a minimum
  • Management roles, including Business Managers to commence at SSO2 SR4
  • Professional (Allied Health) positions to commence at SSO2 SR4
  • Positions that require a mandatory qualification to commence at SSO2 SR4 (there continues to be disagreement about what constitutes a mandatory qualification)
  • The hard barrier between SSO1 SR2 and SSO3 be removed, so that SSOs in this group can progress to the next level without advertisement. This proposition has some support at DEECD but is subject to government endorsement.
CPSU will know shortly whether these and other reforms have government approval.
