Formation of CPSU Victoria Police Academy Branch Section

Updated 22/04/2016

Due to the recent change of government and the upcoming Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement negotiations there is both a need and opportunity for CPSU to create a local structure that best equips members to have a voice.

Due to the recent change of government and the upcoming Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement negotiations there is both a need and opportunity for CPSU to create a local structure that best equips members to have a voice.

What is a Branch Section?

Most unions provide for particular sections of their membership to form local workplace structures, whose purpose is to facilitate an active union presence. Put simply, members are best equipped to determine the direction of union representation in their own workplace.

A Branch Section (also known as "sub-branch") is formally established under the Rules of the union and has an elected governing body, known as a Branch Committee. A Branch Committee elects a Branch President who is responsible for coordinating the Branch Committee.

The role of the CPSU office and staff is to provide support and advice regarding the ongoing activities of the Branch Committee. The Branch Section has a Constitution which is endorsed by the overall governing body of CPSU, the Victorian Branch Council. Finally, all members of the Branch Committee receive ongoing paid training and support.

Who will be members of the CPSU Victoria Police Academy Branch Section?

Anyone who works at Victoria Police Academy and is a CPSU member is a member of the Branch Section.

Who will be members of the Branch Committee?

I propose the following would be members of the CPSU VicPol Academy Branch Committee:

  • Any CPSU member at VicPol Academy who is nominated or elected from among their work group
  • All current or future CPSU Workplace Representatives
  • All current or future Health and Safety Representatives who are also CPSU members

NB: You do not need to be a CPSU Workplace Representative to be nominated/elected to the Committee but you must be a CPSU member.

How do I nominate?

Simply email your CPSU Industrial Organiser, Keiran Macfarlane – kmacfarlane@cpsuvic.org with the subject "VicPol Academy Branch Section".

A constitution for the Branch section is at this link.

In the meantime…CPSU survey

In the meantime I ask that you and your colleagues complete the online CPSU VicPol Academy survey. This survey is open to all Academy Public Servants, including those who have not yet joined CPSU – encourage them to complete this survey and join CPSU at www.cpsuvic.org.

The survey results will provide CPSU a snapshot of current issues for the new Branch Section Committee to discuss, and then take to Academy management for discussion and resolution. The survey closes on DATE, after which results will be published. Please note that no individual will be identified in the publication of results.

Finally, the key message from me is – this is your union and the formation of the CPSU VicPol Academy Branch Section provides you with the opportunity to determine the direction you want your union to take.

Yours sincerely

Catherine Davies
State CPSU Assistant Secretary
