Equal Opportunity

Updated 26/06/2023

If you have experienced discrimination in the workplace, CPSU can assist.

Discrimination means being treated less favourably because of one of the following attributes:

  • age;
  • breastfeeding;
  • gender identity;
  • impairment;
  • industrial activity;
  • lawful sexual activity;
  • marital status;
  • parental status or status as a carer;
  • physical features;
  • political belief or activity;
  • pregnancy;
  • race;
  • religious belief or activity;
  • sex;
  • sexual orientation;
  • personal association (whether as a relative or otherwise) with a person who is identified by reference to any of the above attributes

If your case is not connected to an attribute, no discrimination is occurring. However, there may be unreasonable treatment or bullying occurring.

CPSU may help you draft your complaints, and may represent you in mediations at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. If you lodge your own Equal Opportunity action, the CPSU cannot guarantee that we will represent you. Contact CPSU's E&CT (Entitlements and Compliance Team)  before you approach the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

The E&CT will advise you on the strength of your case and any possible costs that may be awarded against you should your case be unsuccessful. You can contact the team via contact page.

Before you contact CPSU

  • Consider what attribute from the list above you believe is the basis of the discrimination
  • Speak to the local CPSU workplace representative
  • Have your membership number ready
  • Determine what outcome you want to achieve
