Ravenhall Prison Wage Cut Proposal Heading to Industrial Action Now

Updated 30/08/2022

CPSU met with GEO management on Friday 19 August to report back on members' views about the GEO offer provided last week.

CPSU has formally advised GEO that notwithstanding agreement on a range of matters, members did not support the company's pay offer.

In case you have not seen the GEO without prejudice offer, here it is:

Date of Effect

Percentage Increase

August 2022

2.75%

August 2023

2.50%

August 2024

2.50%

GEO also rejected the claim for an extra week of leave.

The parties have agreed to try and reach an acceptable outcome, although no further bargaining meetings are scheduled at this stage. GEO Ravenhall management will need to discuss bargaining further with Head Office.

CPSU to request Fair Work Commission (FWC) permission to take industrial action

CPSU will now make application to FWC for a ballot to approve industrial action which could be bans or strike action. If our application is successful, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will arrange a postal ballot of members. This will take at least 6 weeks.

While the ballot takes place, CPSU is willing to meet with GEO to try and reach agreement.

Only CPSU members are able to vote in the protected action ballot; and only union members can take industrial action if the ballot is approved.

The FWC must decide our application within 2 days. To allow as many employees to join the union before the ballot application, we will lodge the application on Friday 26 August.

The ballot will only be approved if a majority of ballot papers are returned to the AEC.

It does not matter if all the returned ballots vote YES if not enough ballot papers are returned.

CPSU delegates will finalise the industrial action options for the ballot over the next few days.

You must vote YES and return the ballot to show GEO that their offer is not acceptable.
