Police Org Review Mooted while Current PS Job Freeze Exposes Costs
CPSU has met with Victoria Police who have advised that an Organisational Review will be undertaken. The objectives of the review we were advised are:
1. Categorise current Victoria Police functions/activities as:
- core and funded
- core and unfunded
- non-core and funded
- non-core and unfunded
2. Identify options to support an organisational structure, having regard to fiscal responsibility and sustainability, including the associated risks and impacts of ceasing or reducing functions/activities, or delivering core functions/activities differently.
3. Identify opportunities to deliver operational efficiencies that will enhance deployment of resources to deliver core policing services.
The principles underpinned will be:
- Community Safety
- Core mission
- Cost effective and funding justifications
Phase 1:
Functions and activities at individual Command/ Department/ Region level
Phase 2:
Whole of organisation structure at Command/ Department/ Region level and Portfolio level
What we know
- Victoria Police Executive Command will meet in mid November to discuss the findings of phase 1.
- Victoria Police have agreed to meet with CPSU after their mid November meeting to advise of the findings and next steps.
- Any recommendations regarding the phases will go to Government in late January.
- It will be business as usual until Government is consulted
- CPSU delegates will be released to assist with any organisational change processes
What we don’t know (yes, we did ask):

- What type of role is core/non-core
- What type of role is unfunded/funded
- Will there be redundancies
