Commencement of Operations at Western Plains

Updated 01/07/2025

Today marks a major milestone with the commencement of prisoner intake at Western Plains Correctional Centre.

CPSU proudly congratulates all members involved in bringing this new site online — your hard work, professionalism, and solidarity have made this moment possible.

This is the beginning of a significant new chapter for Victoria’s corrections system.

CPSU recognises the commitment and resilience shown by our members on the ground at Western Plains, who have worked tirelessly through preparation, training, and challenges to get the centre operational. Your efforts exemplify the strength of unionised workplaces — where collective experience, shared values, and support deliver results.

We also acknowledge the vital role of the Security and Emergency Services Group (SESG) in coordinating prisoner movements, and thank CPSU members from other sites, Corrections Victoria, and across DJCS who stepped up to support the planning and implementation of this complex undertaking.

CPSU has stood beside members throughout this process, and we will continue to advocate for safe conditions, fair workloads, and proper staffing as operations expand.

This success belongs to workers — and the union will remain strong for you every step of the way.

Congratulations, and welcome to this new chapter.
