The fight to save VicHealth reaches a critical moment today, with Parliament set to debate the State Government's controversial plan to abolish the health promotion agency.

The Community and Public Sector Union, along with VicHealth supporters from all ends of the political spectrum, will gather on the steps of Parliament during the debate to celebrate the incredible work of the agency over the last 40 years.

The government announced its plans to abolish VicHealth in December last year as part of the Silver Review recommendations, which sparked significant backlash from the Victorian community.

VicHealth staff, community organisations, former political leaders and academics have warned the decision will weaken Victoria’s independent public health leadership at a time when prevention has never been more critical.

It currently operates as a standalone public health foundation, which allows it to make health decisions without being influenced by powerful lobbies that can pressure governments.

CPSU Vic Secretary Jiselle Hanna will speak at the rally along with Greens MP for Brunswick, Dr Tim Read, Professor in Public Health at Melbourne’s School of Population and Global Health, Dr Rob Moodie and others.

Support for VicHealth has transcended political divides, highlighting the agency’s unique place in the hearts of Victorians and the vital role it plays in our community.

Over its 40-year history, VicHealth has been responsible for developing life-saving heath initiatives like SunSmart and Quit, and creating ongoing campaigns around healthy eating and exercise, anti-racism, and gender equality.

Abolishing VicHealth will dismantle a globally recognised prevention model and undermine decades of progress in improving the health of Victorian communities.
