Finance Manager (Full-time, ongoing)
We’re looking for a strategic, values-driven Finance Manager to lead and strengthen the financial stewardship of Victoria’s primary public sector union.
You can read the position description here.
At the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU SPSF Victoria), we’re a fighting, member-led union. Every day we stand up for the people who keep Victoria running — the policy staff, prison officers, scientists, child protection workers, IT experts, inspectors, and many others who make the state work.
Strong finances are essential to a strong union. As our Finance Manager, you’ll ensure the union’s resources are managed with integrity, transparency, and foresight — supporting campaigns, industrial action, member services, and long-term sustainability.
This is a senior position with responsibility for financial strategy, compliance, and reporting.
What you’ll do:
- Lead the union’s financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning.
- Ensure full compliance with the finance and audit related aspects of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 and extended Fair Work Regime, and with all other relevant statutory and regulatory obligations.
- Oversee preparation of annual financial statements, management reports, audits, BAS, FBT, PAYG, and other reporting requirements.
- Provide high-quality financial advice to the Secretary, Executive, and Branch Council to support strategic decision-making.
- Develop and improve financial systems, internal controls, and risk management frameworks.
- Support major projects, campaigns, and organisational initiatives with robust financial analysis.
- Work collaboratively across the organisation to ensure financial literacy and strong budget ownership at all levels.
You’ll bring:
- Significant experience in financial management, ideally within a not-for-profit, union, or membership-based organisation.
- Strong knowledge of Australian accounting standards and compliance obligations.
- Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements and managing external audit processes.
- High-level analytical skills and the ability to translate complex financial information into clear strategic advice.
- Sound judgement, integrity, and a commitment to accountability and transparency.
- Leadership capability and the ability to build a high-performing, service-oriented finance function.
- A commitment to social justice and the role of unions in building collective power for workers.
