HSR Initial OHS Training Course May 2026

About the Course

The CPSU Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Initial Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Training Course is approved by WorkSafe Victoria.

It provides elected HSRs and Deputy HSRs with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to effectively carry out their important role in maintaining a safe workplace.

CPSU training is tailored to the Victorian Public Sector, featuring practical case studies and interactive activities that reflect real workplace situations.


Course Learning Objectives

As determined by WorkSafe Victoria, this course covers:

1. Understanding and interpreting OHS legislation and its relationship to the role of an HSR

2. Identifying duties and obligations under the legislation

3. Representation, participation, consultation, and issue resolution in the workplace

4. The powers of HSRs, including issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing cessation of unsafe work


Course Details

Delivery: 5 days over 3 weeks

Time: 8.45am – 4.35pm

Location: Exhibition Street, Melbourne

Day 4: 13/5/26

Day 5: 19/5/26


Entitlements and Fees

Under section 67 of the OHS Act 2004, HSRs and Deputy HSRs are entitled to:

  • Choose the approved training provider of their choice, in consultation with their employer
  • Paid time off work to attend the course
  • Course costs are covered by the employer. 

Payment must be received prior to commencement (except for waitlisted participants). An invoice will be sent to the nominated biller.


Enrolment Information

Participants will receive:

  • A certificate of attendance upon full completion
  • All course materials provided
  • Lunch daily

Please ensure you can attend all five days. The course must be completed within six months of commencement.
