Gazette - Dispute Lodged over Local Government Exclusions

Updated 22/04/2016

The amendment to the Local Government Act, which will result in many electorate officers being forced to choose between their employment and their Council positions, is currently before Parliament with the Government remaining unmoved by CPSU representations on the unfairness of the legislation, the over-reaction it represents and the personal and financial cost to affected employees.

CPSU has spent several weeks trying to negotiate a fair and reasonable ex-gratia payment for affected CPSU members, but Parliament has been unwilling to negotiate with us. Instead, it has advised that an ex-gratia payment will be paid to employees who resign as a consequence of the amendment.

There is no mention of the Agreement termination period being included as part of the payment, nor is there any consideration of an additional payment to make it genuinely equivalent to the redundancy provision in net terms.
CPSU believes that a compensation package should take into consideration the extraordinary circumstances to mitigate the harm to individuals.

CPSU notified a dispute to Fair Work Australia yesterday.

CPSU is seeking the assistance of FWA to determine a fair and reasonable outcome for our members.
