Professional Indemnity Insurance

Updated 22/04/2016

CPSU provides all eligible members, on a group insurance basis, a package of benefits that provide full professional indemnity and public liability insurance from 1 September 2013.

The scheme for Professional Indemnity Insurance applies for all occupations of our members across the public sector and those of our members in the private sector.  It is a NIL excess arrangement.

The policy offers coverage for legal defence of claims against a person in their professional capacity including court attendance, indemnity to contractors, legal consultation, lost documents, spousal liability.

The insurance package provides all financial members with insurance protection (professional indemnity) in the event that, during the normal course of their work, they do something that results in financial loss to a client, physical assault, for any court/tribunal hearings (i.e. Bushfire Royal Commission) etc.

It aims to give our members who have an obligation to take out the insurance to do their job (psychologists, allied health staff, nurses) coverage as part of their membership as well as all members.

Retroactive cover means that if the circumstances that exposed the member to being sued occurred prior to the cover coming into effect then they are still covered.

The cover extends to freelance work carried out by members outside their main employment if they earn less than $45,000 gross per annum from that freelance work.

The insurance is only available to financial members of the union and if you let your membership lapse or you resign then the cover ends even if a case is on foot.

The scheme commenced on 1st September 2013.  All current members are be immediately covered.  Coverage will be extended to new members upon joining.
