Opportunity for YES Trainees

Updated 11/07/2017

CPSU invites members to encourage current or former YES trainees in their workplaces to apply for the new Youth Cadetship Scheme (YCS). This program is a joint initiative of CPSU and Jobs Victoria in DEDJTR.

The YCS gives young Victorians a job in the public service and an experience that will put them on the path to a meaningful career.

Cadets will be employed directly by a department or agency at a VPS Grade 1 level, and will be subject to the full range of conditions of the VPS Agreement. Cadetships may be undertaken in the trainee’s current or former workplace where positions are available, or prospective cadets may apply for a position in another participating department or agency.

Cadets will undertake a nationally-recognised qualification, a Certificate IV in Government, through Box Hill Institute. As a partner in the Scheme, CPSU will provide individual support to cadets and establish a peer network.

The cadetship runs for two years, and at its conclusion cadets will be considered on a priority basis for VPS Grade 2 positions.

To be eligible, prospective cadets must have completed, or nearly completed, a YES traineeship and represent one or more of the following priority groups:

  • long-term unemployed person (prior to the YES traineeship)
  • resident in a rural or remote area of Victoria
  • early school leaver (prior to year 12)
  • single parent
  • have a disability or mental illness
  • social housing tenant
  • out of home care client
  • offender/ex-offender/youth justice client
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • culturally and linguistically diverse
  • refugee or asylum seeker
  • a family member of a veteran.

Applications for the first intake are now open (during June).

More information and application forms can be found here.

Alternatively, to find out more, current and former YES trainees are invited to attend a morning tea with CPSU and Jobs Victoria on Wednesday, 14th June from 9:45am and 11:30 at the Sheraton Melbourne Hotel, 27 Little Collins Street, Melbourne. RSVP's are required by 13th June.

Please pass this on to any YES trainees you know.
