NGV Scraps Sun Shade

Updated 19/01/2018

A unilateral decision to remove a sun shade in order to make way for a DJ booth above the Information Desk inside NGVI ahead of a severe Melbourne heatwave has resulted in a visit from WorkSafe as temperatures soar.

CPSU contacted NGV this week to express our concerns and to draw management’s attention to their legal obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic).

CPSU understands that this decision was made without speaking with affected employees or relevant HSRs (Health and Safety Representatives), despite clear obligations to consult under the OH&S Act.

This recent action by NGV management could not have come at a worse time.

Even before temperatures in Melbourne reached 40 degrees, CPSU members have complained about excessive heat in the Federation Court due to radiant heat from the glass ceiling.

CPSU notified WorkSafe of our concerns and a inspector attended the Gallery yesterday afternoon.

Worksafe will provide an entry report that details their findings and recommendations.
