Important Info for Fixed Term Contract Employees

Updated 02/04/2020
CPSU made representations on behalf of employees to ensure staff working across the Service had some surety around fixed term contracts in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the declaration of the state of emergency being announced.  DHHS workers on fixed term contracts (established before March 2020) that expire on or before 30 June 2020 will be extended until 31 December 2020 with DHHS working through the process of identifying relevant employees to undertake the extensions (some conditions will need to be met), and DJCS has proposed the following process (below) for extending fixed term contracts that expire on or before 30 June 2020 following discussion with CPSU.

Where a DJCS employee is on a fixed-term employment contract that was established before 1 March 2020, that is due to expire on or before the 30 June 2020, the employment contract should be extended to 31 December 2020 where the following conditions are met:

  • a. The employee has created a profile on the Career Services database and indicated their willingness to be deployed to support COVID-19 response and other critical service delivery work;
  • b. Have met performance and attendance requirements;
  • c. Are willing and able to work from home, or deliver work though other changed working arrangements necessitated by the COVID-19 health emergency; and
  • d. Is seeking an extension of their existing employment contract.

DJCS is working through the process as well of identifying relevant employees who are captured by the above and the procedure to undertake the extensions.

CPSU will assist any member who requires an extension.

CPSU will continue discussions with DHHS and DJCS about the process to be applied to employees on fixed term contracts and provide updates to members accordingly.

Now more than ever it pays to be a member of CPSU. Encourage your colleagues on fixed term contracts to join CPSU now!
