Commemorative Badge to Celebrate
When 1,000 public servants crammed into the Athenaeum Hall in Collins Street on 17 June 1885 to form the Victorian Public Service Association they had no idea that we d be still here and turning 125 today.

inaugural meeting achievements history

The diligent work of thousands of men and women over the past 125 years has helped build a strong and vibrant public service in Victoria.

Over the years, as economic fortunes have waxed and waned, it is often the Public Service that bears the brunt of the response by Government s.

It is clear that both the original members and officials of the union who gathered in 1885 and our members today hold firm to the belief that not withstanding who our employer is, ‘the Crown in the Right of the State of Victoria, we have all pursued the right to organise, to participate in the political life of the State, and to be granted rights of representation and entitlements which, to many in the private sector, are accepted as given.

To celebrate this magnificent achievement a commemorative plaque was unveiled by Premier John Brumby with CPSU State Secretary Karen Batt at the Athenaeum to mark the inaugural meeting 125 years ago of the formation of our Union.
