Sacked public servants prop up budget surplus
Today’s Victorian State Budget comes at the cost of decimated public services and sacked government workers.
Expert analysis from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) shows the $3.7 billion surplus over the forward estimates is largely funded by thousands of public sector job cuts, including those accepted from the Silver Review.
Some cuts of more than 25 per cent to individual department wage budgets are now indicated in the next financial year.
Last week the Premier was praising public servants in a sappy video – after three years of consecutive job cuts.
Almost a hundred separate restructures have occurred in the past year affecting thousands of public servants, with the budget suggesting more job cuts are possible through reduced funding for core functions and agencies.
This puts more pressure on our members, and places delivery of essential public services at risk.
The CPSU will step up its fight for fair funding and an end to public sector job cuts in the leadup to the state election in November.
The CPSU calls on the Allan Government to commit to no more public sector job cuts
Remarks attributable to CPSU Victoria Branch Assistant Secretary Mitch Vandewerdt-Holman:
"Today’s budget surplus was brought to you by public service job cuts."
"This budget offers no reprieve for our members who have dealt with three years of cuts to public service jobs – this budget does nothing to make up for that impact."
"Victorians deserve a public service that is secure, stable, and staffed by hard-working, talented Victorians. Not disingenuous platitudes."
"We've recognised cuts of more than 25 per cent to individual department wage budgets which is alarming. Our members can’t do more with less."
